Michael Busch went 2-for-3 with a double on Saturday in the Dodgers' shutout loss to the Giants.
There weren't a lot of positives for the Dodgers in this one as Busch supplied their lone extra-base hit in a lopsided shutout loss at the hands of the division-rival Giants.
Bobby Miller was charged with seven runs over 5 2/3 innings on Saturday in a loss to the Giants.
Alex Wood tossed five scoreless innings on Saturday in a win over the Dodgers.
Tristan Beck tossed four scoreless innings on Saturday against the Dodgers to collect his second save of the season.
Rays' manager Kevin Cash confirmed that Yonny Chirinos will start on Sunday against the Padres.
The right-hander worked 3 2/3 innings as an opener against the Athletics on Tuesday, so he'll be on regular rest for Sunday's outing. It's unclear how deep he'll work into the game, whether it's in a bulk role or a typical starter's workload. He has been terrific in whatever role they've given him this season, registering a 2.35 ERA over 38 1/3 innings.
Zach Eflin allowed two runs over six innings on Saturday in a loss to the Padres.
Eflin finished with five strikeouts and also issued a pair of walks. Eflin finished with five strikeouts and also issued a pair of walks. The 29-year-old righty carried a shutout into the fifth inning before Juan Soto delivered a sacrifice fly and Manny Machado followed with an RBI single. Those two runs wound up being the difference in a low-scoring affair. He'll bring a strong 3.26 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77/13 K/BB ratio across 77 1/3 innings (13 starts) into a tasty home matchup on Friday against the Rays.
Josh Hader tossed a scoreless inning on Saturday against the Rays to record his 17th save of the season.
Hader was called upon to guard a two-run advantage in the final frame and needed just 19 pitches (16 strikes) pitches to preserve the victory. He struck out Randy Arozarena and got Isaac Paredes to line out to third base before giving up a two-out single to Taylor Walls. He managed to extinguish any hope of a Tampa Bay comeback by striking out Manuel Margot to end the contest.
Randy Arozarena went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on Saturday in the Rays' shutout loss to the Padres.
There are going to be nights like this, even for one of the top lineups in baseball. Arozarena was unable to get anything going in this one as the Rays mustered only three hits combined in a shutout loss at Petco Park.
Manny Machado went 1-for-4 with an RBI single and also stole a base on Saturday, leading the Padres to a 2-0 win over the Rays.
Machado delivered a fifth-inning RBI single and also wound up stealing second base -- his third theft of the season -- later in the frame.
Astros acquired RHP Joel Kuhnel from the Reds for cash considerations.
The right-hander was then optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land. Kuhnel had been designated for assignment by the Reds earlier in the week, so they were happy to flip him for anything that they could get. He posted an 8.10 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and a 0/2 K/BB ratio in 3 1/3 innings during his time with the Reds. He'll function as extra bullpen depth for the Astros.
Astros transferred RHP Lance McCullers Jr. to the 60-day injured list.
The right-hander underwent season-ending surgery on Tuesday to repair a flexor tendon and remove a bone spur from his right forearm. He'll miss the remainder of the 2023 season -- and possibly the start of the 2024 campaign -- while recovering from the procedure. This move freed up a spot on the Astros' 40-man roster for the acquisition of Joel Kuhnel on Saturday.
White Sox' manager Pedro Grifol told reporters on Saturday that Tim Anderson (shoulder) could return to the team's starting lineup on Sunday.
Anderson was pulled from Saturday's game in the fourth inning due to right shoulder soreness -- and his replacement, Zach Remillard, wound up being the hero in a victory over the Mariners. It doesn't appear that the shoulder injury is very serious though and Anderson could be back atop the White Sox' lineup as soon as Sunday.
Making his major league debut, Samad Taylor delivered a game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth as the Royals edged the Angels 10-9 on Saturday.
The wild game saw the Angels blow an 8-2 lead in the seventh and eighth, go up by one in the top of the ninth and then blow the lead again. Taylor ended it with a fly to deep center that would have been an out under normal circumstances but went uncaught with Mike Trout playing in. The 24-year-old previously walked twice during the game. He started in left field today, but he will also see time at second base. He should offer fantasy value in deeper mixed leagues.
Bobby Witt Jr. knocked in four runs with a double and a single against the Angels on Saturday.
Witt is batting .327/.373/.418 with eight RBI this month. He also has four steals, though he's been caught three times. Regardless, it's all good for those using him in fantasy leagues.
Jace Peterson went 0-for-5 and blew a tag at third base in the 12th inning Saturday in a loss to the Phillies.
All Peterson had to do was keep the tag on Cristian Pache, who made a very aggressive slide into the third and ended up coming well off the bag. Instead, he was too busy showing the ump he had the ball after obviously tagging Pache late on the initial play. Why is it so hard for infielders to just keep their gloves on the runner? Pache ended up scoring the go-ahead run on a Kyle Schwarber single, and the A's lost 3-2.
James Kaprielian gave up one run in 5 1/3 innings and struck out six against the Phillies on Saturday.
Kaprielian came up two outs short of a third straight quality start, but he lowered his ERA to 2.59 this month. He's turned things around nicely after a horrible start that saw him lose his rotation spot just two weeks into the season.
Jeff Hoffman got his second big-league save for throwing a hitless 12th inning against the A's on Saturday.
His other save came with the Rockies in 2020. Hoffman has a 2.57 ERA and a 19/7 K/BB ratio in 14 innings since being called up May 4.
Kyle Schwarber delivered a go-ahead hit in the 12th as the Phillies bested the A's 3-2 on Saturday.
It was a 1-1 game through 10. Both teams scored single runs in the 11th, but only the Phillies scored in the 12th. Schwarber is in the midst of a fine month than has seen him bat .222/.355/.571 with six homers and 12 RBI.
Carlos Pérez went 3-for-5 with a double and drove in both A's runs Saturday against the Phillies.
Pérez plated runs in the fifth and 11th innings. He's been a solid player for the A's in his first major league action since 2018, hitting .248/.310/.396 in 113 plate appearances. He's probably a better player than Shea Langeliers right now, though it still wouldn't make much sense to increase his role.
Logan Gilbert pitched decently in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.
The 26-year-old hurler also issued three walks on the day while punching out three batters. He served up a solo homer to Eloy Jimenez in the second inning, then allowed a run-scoring single by Luis Robert Jr. in the fifth inning. Gilbert exited in the sixth with a 3-2 lead and in line for a victory, but the M's bullpen was unable to hang on for him. He got 11 whiffs on 80 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 25 percent. He'll carry a 4.31 ERA and 1.07 WHIP into Friday's showdown against the Orioles in Baltimore.
