Shane McClanahan left Thursday's start against the Royals with an apparent injury.
Not good. McClanahan was lifted from the contest with two outs in the fourth inning following a visit from manager Kevin Cash and head athletic trainer Joe Benge. The 26-year-old fantasy ace was charged with two runs over 3 2/3 innings before departing. There should be an update on his status shortly.
Johnny Cueto (ankle) was lit up for six runs over 4 2/3 innings on Thursday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville.
It's a bit unfair to read too much into the results, but Cueto wound up allowing eight hits, including three homers, in his latest rehab outing. He struck out three batters, issued one walk and threw 79 pitches (48 strikes). The Marlins want to figure out a way to get Eury Pérez a break to limit his innings so he's available later in the season, so Cueto might get another look in Miami soon. He hasn't pitched in the majors since suffering a biceps injury in early April during his season debut.
Giants transferred OF Mitch Haniger from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
Haniger underwent right forearm surgery last Thursday and is expected to miss at least 10 weeks, which puts his potential return sometime in late August. The procedural move opened up a spot on San Francisco's 40-man roster to acquire outfielder Dalton Guthrie from the Phillies in a trade.
Red Sox optioned LHP Brandon Walter to Triple-A Worcester.
Walter allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings on Thursday in his big league debut against the Twins and has likely earned another look in the majors in a couple weeks. The 26-year-old southpaw isn't a recommended option for fantasy managers, but he's showing some promise as a potential future swingman.
Red Sox recalled LHP Chris Murphy from Triple-A Worcester.
Murphy gets the call back to Boston's active roster ahead of Friday's series opener against the White Sox. The 25-year-old southpaw has reeled off six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and only one walk over two appearances this season in the majors. He figures to pitch in long relief at some point this weekend.
Rangers released INF Yoshi Tsutsugo.
Tsutsugo has opted out of his minor league contract with the Rangers, which he signed back in January, after batting .249 (42-for-169) with six homers, 33 RBI and two steals across 51 games this season for Triple-A Round Rock. The 31-year-old will head back to free agency in search of a new opportunity.
Twins signed RHP Isaac Mattson to a minor league contract.
Mattson last appeared in the majors for the Orioles during the 2021 campaign when he made four relief appearances. The 27-year-old righty gets another shot in affiliated ball after posting a solid 3.32 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 24/8 K/BB ratio across 19 innings (18 appearances) this season for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League.
Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer on Thursday in the Padres' lopsided win over the Giants.
Machado took lefty Alex Wood deep in the third inning to give the Padres an early six-run advantage, which they never relinquished in a one-sided contest. It was his ninth round-tripper of the season. The 30-year-old third baseman is in the midst of a down year relative to his previous levels of production, batting .258/.302/.421 with 29 runs scored, nine homers, 32 RBI and three stolen bases across 252 plate appearances.
Patrick Bailey singled twice on Thursday as the Giants' 10-game winning streak was unceremoniously snapped in a blowout loss at the hands of the Padres.
Bailey was responsible for two of San Francisco's three hits combined in a shutout loss to their longtime rivals. The 24-year-old rookie backstop has put together a strong debut so far, batting .318/.344/.523 with three homers and 20 RBI across 95 plate appearances through 26 contests in the majors.
Ji-Man Choi (Achilles) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with Double-A Altoona.
Choi has been out since mid-April due to a left Achilles strain. He's aiming to return sometime in late June or early July after getting in a handful of rehab games.
Andrew McCutchen (elbow) has returned to the Pirates' lineup for Thursday's showdown against the Marlins.
McCutchen is back at designated hitter and batting second on Thursday evening following a two-game absence due to some lingering right elbow soreness.
Pirates recalled RHP Cody Bolton from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Bolton gets the call back to the majors to provide the Pirates with some extra pitching depth ahead of Thursday's game against the Marlins. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed 11 runs on 15 hits with a 7/9 K/BB ratio across eight innings (five appearances) earlier this season in his first exposure to the majors.
Alex Wood was torched for six runs over 3 1/3 innings on Thursday in as loss to the Padres.
Wood served up four hits, including two-run homers to Gary Sánchez and Manny Machado, respectively, in an abbreviated outing. The 32-year-old left-hander tossed five scoreless frames against the Dodgers his last time out in his return from the injured list, so this calamitous outing came out of nowhere. He'll aim for better results next time out in a challenging road matchup against the Blue Jays.
Trevor Rogers (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing.
Rogers remains without an official timetable to return and it doesn't sound like he's close at all after suffering a right shoulder injury earlier this month during his minor league rehab assignment.
Kody Clemens went hitless in a third straight game Thursday, finishing 0-for-4 against the Braves.
Clemens is hitting .185/.214/.241 in 56 plate appearances this month. The Phillies might want to reconsider Darick Hall at first base or maybe just go more frequently to Alec Bohm at first and Edmundo Sosa at third.
Raisel Iglesias was credited with a win after pitching a perfect ninth in a tie game Thursday.
The Braves scored five times in the top of the 10th to put Iglesias in line of for the win. It's his third win to go along with 10 saves in 21 appearances.
J.P. Crawford (shoulder) is not in the Mariners' lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Yankees.
Crawford will sit out his second straight contest due to a right shoulder contusion, but it sounds like there's a high degree of probability that he'll be ready to return on Friday. It'll be Jose Caballero handling shortstop on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
Bryce Elder tossed seven shutout innings Thursday against the Phillies.
Neither team scored until the 10th, so Elder wasn't involved in the decision, keeping him at 5-1. It's the fourth time this year that he's gone without allowing a run. He's also given up just one run on five occasions. At 2.40, he's no longer the NL ERA leader, but it seems rather likely that he'll regain the title in a few days. That's because Marcus Stroman, who is at 2.28, is pitching in London on Sunday. When the Red Sox and Yankees played there in 2019, there were 50 runs scored over the two games.
Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in a tie game in the ninth Thursday against the Braves.
He got a little help, as the middle strikeout was granted to him after Travis d'Arnaud was late getting into the box. Of course, Kimbrel has been on the other side of several of those this season, including one automatic ball today. Kimbrel has pitched scoreless ball in each of his last five appearances, and he's up to 47 strikeouts in 29 innings for the season.
Michael Harris II went 2-for-4 and knocked in the go-ahead run in the 10th as the Braves beat the Phillies 5-1 on Thursday.
The game was scoreless until Harris singled in the automatic runner in the 10th. Four more runs followed, with the last two coming on a Marcell Ozuna homered, and the Phillies couldn't muster a comeback, other than scoring the Manfred Man. Harris, the reigning NL Player of the Week, is batting .382 with four homers and three steals this month.
