Michael Massey (finger) is not in the Royals' lineup for Sunday's contest against the Angels.
Massey will miss his third consecutive game Sunday as he continues to deal with a left index finger laceration. It doesn't sound like he's going to require a trip to the injured list. It'll be Nicky Lopez filling in at second base once again on Sunday afternoon.
Spencer Horwitz is at designated hitter and batting eighth on Sunday against the Rangers.
Horwitz will be making his major league debut during Sunday's series finale against the Rangers after being called up earlier this weekend from Triple-A Buffalo. The 25-year-old slugger was batting .300/.421/.405 with two homers and three stolen bases across 259 plate appearances this season in the upper minors. He's getting a look in the majors while Brandon Belt is sidelined due to a left hamstring injury.
Stuart Fairchild (neck) remains out of the Reds' lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros.
Fairchild will sit out his third straight contest on Sunday afternoon due to neck tightness, but he's listed on Cincinnati's lineup card, so it doesn't appear that he's headed to the injured list. There's a chance he's available off the bench soon.
Mets optioned INF Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse.
Vientos has been shipped back to the minors with Pete Alonso unexpectedly returning from the injured list ahead of Sunday's series finale against the Cardinals.
Reds optioned OF TJ Hopkins to Triple-A Louisville.
Hopkins has been sent back to the upper minors with righty-masher Jake Fraley returning from the injured list. The 26-year-old outfielder tallied just four hits in 24 at-bats over 14 games in the majors since being called up back on June 3.
Orioles designated RHP Reed Garrett for assignment.
Garrett winds up losing his spot on Baltimore's 40-man roster due to injuries at the catcher position necessitating the addition of journeyman backstop José Godoy. The 30-year-old right-hander put up some stellar numbers this season at Triple-A Norfolk, but struggled in a pair of recent outings for the Orioles.
Orioles placed C James McCann on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain.
McCann will likely wind up missing at least a couple weeks, depending on the severity of the sprain. Journeyman José Godoy has been brought up to take his spot on Baltimore's active roster as a backup catcher.
Astros recalled RHP Shawn Dubin from Triple-A Sugar Land.
Dubin was a 13th-round selection of the Astros back in 2018 and will be making his big league debut when he gets into a game. The 27-year-old right-hander has compiled a lackluster 7.96 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 25/15 K/BB ratio across 26 innings (nine appearances, five starts) this season at the Triple-A level. He'll provide Houston with some extra long relief depth and could potentially get a look in the starting rotation later next week.
Nestor Cortes (shoulder) played catch on Sunday.
Cortes landed on the injured list earlier this month with a left rotator cuff sprain and is facing an extended absence. It's a positive sign that he's resumed throwing, but he's going to require a lengthy buildup and is unlikely to return prior to the All-Star break.
Royals designated RHP Mike Mayers for assignment.
Mayers has been removed from Kansas City's 40-man roster after registering an inflated 6.15 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 17/10 K/BB ratio across 26 1/3 innings (six appearances, two starts). The 31-year-old righty might attract some interest on waivers over the next few days because of his flexibility, but he's merely organizational depth at this stage of his career.
Royals selected the contract of RHP Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Omaha.
Kriske signed a minor league contract with the Royals last December and has earned a shot in the majors after recording a 6.00 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 47/14 K/BB ratio across 27 innings (25 appearances) this season for Triple-A Omaha. He's missing a ton of bats this year, which should give him a chance to excel in middle relief. The 29-year-old righty has made 16 relief appearances in the majors since 2020 between the Yankees and Orioles.
Ian Hamilton (groin) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Sunday with Double-A Somerset.
Hamilton will likely require a couple tune-up appearances before rejoining New York's high-leverage bullpen mix in a few days. The 27-year-old righty has been out since mid-May with a right groin strain.
Jose Altuve is not in the Astros' lineup for Sunday's contest against the Reds.
It'll be Mauricio Dubón at the keystone on Sunday afternoon in place of Altuve, who tallied four hits, including a pair of doubles, in Saturday's lopsided defeat at the hands of the Reds.
Byron Buxton is absent from the Twins' lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Tigers.
Buxton receives a day off on Sunday after making three consecutive starts at designated hitter since returning from the injured list earlier this week. It'll be rookie Edouard Julien at designated hitter and leading off in his place.
Royce Lewis is not in the Twins' lineup for Sunday's showdown against the Tigers.
The Twins have been extremely careful with Lewis' workload in his return to the majors, so it's not a surprise to see him sitting out Sunday afternoon's series finale following three consecutive starts at the hot corner. It'll be Willi Castro taking over at third base in this one.
Will Vest will serve as the Tigers' opener for Sunday's game against the Twins.
It'll be a bullpen game on Sunday for the Tigers with Vest drawing the starting assignment. Detroit will hand the ball to rookie Reese Olson for Monday's series opener against the Royals.
Luis Arraez is not in the Marlins' lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals.
It's a rare off day for Arraez, who has started 20 consecutive contests for Miami since May 26. The 26-year-old reigning American League batting champion has racked up six hits over his last two contests to raise his batting average to .388 through 66 games. It'll be Garrett Hampson at the keystone on Sunday afternoon.
Jacob Amaya is at shortstop and batting ninth on Sunday against the Nationals.
Amaya will be making his major league debut on Sunday afternoon after being called up on Saturday from Triple-A Jacksonville. The 24-year-old middle infielder was acquired from the Dodgers back in January in exchange for veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas.
Greg Weissert will serve as the Yankees' 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.
Weissert provides the Yankees with some extra bullpen depth for Sunday's twin bill at Fenway Park before heading back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Red Sox recalled RHP Kaleb Ort from Triple-A Worcester.
Ort gets the bump back up to the majors with Tanner Houck (face) landing on the injured list ahead of Sunday's split doubleheader against the Yankees. The 31-year-old middle reliever holds an underwhelming 5.87 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 16/7 K/BB ratio across 15 1/3 innings (14 appearances) this season in the big leagues.
