Tommy Edman went 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks and three runs scored against the Nationals on Monday.
A rather rare strong game for Edman against a right-hander this year. One would think he'd resume playing a lot of infield with Lars Nootbaar back, but the Cardinals have grown very fond of him in center. He might continue to spend quite a bit of time there, which seems like bad news for Dylan Carlson.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (elbow) is scheduled to throw two innings in a live bullpen session on Thursday.
It'll be the first time that the southpaw has faced live hitters since undergoing Tommy John surgery. So far, everything has gone smoothly in his recovery and he's on track for a return to the Blue Jays' rotation in mid-July.
Chad Green (elbow) will throw a live bullpen session at the Blue Jays' spring training facility on Tuesday.
It'll be the first time that the right-hander has faced live hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery. He and teammate Hyun-Jin Ryu are on similar timelines in their recoveries from the reconstructive elbow surgery and both are targeting a return to the Blue Jays around the All-Star break.
Graham Ashcraft (calf) is set to rejoin the Reds' rotation over the weekend.
With Hunter Greene (hip) landing on the injured list on Monday, the Reds will need an extra starter to fill in this week, so Ashcraft's return couldn't have come at a better time. He has been shelved since June 9 due to a left calf contusion that he suffered when he was hit by a comebacker.
Reds designated RHP Kevin Herget for assignment.
With Joey Votto returning from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut on Monday, the Reds needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster and it looks like Herget drew the short straw this time around. The 32-year-old hurler has struggled to a 5.73 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 22 innings in 13 appearances for the Reds this season. There's a decent chance he'll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as excess bullpen depth for the Reds.
J.D. Davis (ankle) remained out of the Giants' starting lineup for Monday night's series opener against the Padres.
While Davis has been available off the bench -- and will be once again on Monday night -- he's still not ready to return to the field just yet due to his Grade 1 right ankle sprain. David Villar will draw another start at the hot corner on Monday night and bat ninth against Michael Wacha and the Padres.
William Contreras is not in the Brewers' starting lineup for Monday's matchup against the Diamondbacks.
It looks to be nothing more than a regular day of rest for the hard-hitting backstop. Victor Caratini will start behind the plate for the Brewers and bat eighth against Merrill Kelly and the Diamondbacks on Monday evening in Milwaukee.
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters on Monday that he expects Kenta Maeda to return to the Twins' rotation this week.
When asked about when that would be, Baldelli responded by saying Maeda "likely will pitch for un in the big leagues by the end of the week. So take that for what it's worth. Maeda went 4 1/3 innings and threw 81 pitches in his final minor league rehab start at Triple-A St. Paul on Friday. If he were to stay on regular rest, that would put his return to the big leagues on Wednesday, though obviously someone would need to be bumped from the Twins' rotation or pushed back to accommodate his return.
Jose Urquidy (shoulder) is progressing in his recovery from right shoulder inflammation and is expected to throw another bullpen session on Wednesday.
He'll then repeat the process with bullpen sessions on Friday and Monday before facing live hitters for the first time. Barring any setbacks through that progression of throwing, he would then be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. At this point, it seems unlikely that he would be ready to rejoin the Astros' bullpen before the All-Star break.
Pirates designated RHP Eli Villalobos for assignment.
The Pirates needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for the arrival of Henry Davis on Monday and it looks like Villalobos was the odd-man out. The 25-year-old hurler has compiled a 4.15 ERA,1.67 WHIP and a 16/15 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings at Triple-A Indianapolis this season.
White Sox placed INF Romy González on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 18, with right shoulder inflammation.
The 26-year-old has had a rough season overall at the plate -- slashing a woeful .194/.208/.376 with three homers, 14 RBI and seven stolen bases. Expect Elvis Andrus to handle the bulk of the action at second base while he's sidelined. Jose Rodriguez was recalled from Double-A Birmingham in a corresponding move to take his place on the active roster.
White Sox recalled INF Jose Rodriguez from Double-A Birmingham.
With Romy González (shoulder) heading to the injured list, Rodriguez will get an opportunity to show what he can do at the big league level for the first time. The 22-year-old has hit .238/.274/.429 with nine homers, 25 RBI and nine stolen bases in 201 plate appearances at Double-A Birmingham this season.
Johnny Cueto (ankle) is scheduled to make his third -- and likely final -- rehab start at Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.
The 37-year-old right-hander is scheduled to throw around five innings or 75 pitches in Thursday's outing. If all goes well, Cueto would then be cleared to return to the Marlins' rotation next week.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (foot) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this week.
There weren't any specifics regarding which day Chisholm would begin his rehab assignment, but the dynamic 25-year-old center fielder will be back in live game action before the week is through. He has been shelved since mid-May due to turf toe, so he'll likely require several games in the minors before he's up to speed and ready to rejoin the Marlins.
Justin Turner is absent from the Red Sox' starting lineup for Monday's contest against the Twins.
It looks to be nothing more than a regular day of rest for the hot-hitting 38-year-old. Masataka Yoshida will function as the Red Sox' designated hitter on Monday while Triston Casas starts at first base and will bat seventh against Pablo Lopez and the Twins in Minnesota.
Blue Jays optioned RHP Bowden Francis to Triple-A Buffalo.
Francis has made three relief appearances this season for the Blue Jays and will head back to the minors to enable them to bring up a fresh bullpen arm for Monday's game against the Marlins.
Blue Jays recalled RHP Trent Thornton from Triple-A Buffalo.
Thornton will be available out of Toronto's bullpen for Monday's series opener against the Marlins. The 29-year-old righty has yet to make an appearance this season in the majors.
Blue Jays recalled C Tyler Heineman from Triple-A Buffalo.
Heineman has been summoned back to the majors as emergency catching depth with Alejandro Kirk (hand) landing on the injured list ahead of Monday's series opener against the Marlins in Miami.
Matt Vierling (back) remains absent from the Tigers' lineup for Monday's game against the Royals.
Vierling will sit out his second straight contest after being scratched from Sunday's series finale against the Twins due to lower back spasms. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for the moment.
Miguel Amaya (hand) is not in the Cubs' lineup for Monday's series opener against the Pirates.
No surprise here after Amaya was hit by a pitch during Sunday's game against the Orioles. Veteran backstop Yan Gomes will handle the catching duties on Monday night.
