Garrett Whitlock allowed four runs with six strikeouts over seven innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Twins.
Whitlock worked a clean first inning before giving up two runs on a double and a pair of base hits in the second. A double and an RBI-groundout would bring in a third run in the third inning. Whitlock struck out two to work around a pair of baserunners in the fourth. He worked a scoreless fifth, then surrendered a solo homer to Max Kepler in the sixth to give the Twins the lead. Whitlock tossed seven innings before he was replaced on the mound, striking out six to no walks. The 27-year-old right-hander has a 4.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 39/7 K/BB across 46 innings. He'll take on the Marlins in Boston his next time out.
Sonny Gray allowed three runs over five innings in a no decision on Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Gray walked a batter and surrendered a run on a double by Rafael Devers in the first inning. He later served up a solo homer to Justin Turner in the third before working around a hit and a walk in the fourth. A triple and a base hit would bring in one more for the Red Sox in the fifth. Gray's day would be done after five frames on 92 pitches. He took a no-decision, striking out five. The 33-year-old right-hander will carry a 2.56 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and an 84/32 K/BB across 81 inning into a start against the Braves in Atlanta on Monday.
Willie Calhoun is dealing with a quad injury.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters following Wednesday's win over the Mariners that Calhoun is undergoing further evaluation after suffering a quad injury during the late stages of the contest. There should be some clarity on his status ahead of Friday's series opener against the Rangers.
Paul Blackburn pitched to a no-decision after giving up four runs in five innings against the Guardians on Wednesday.
He struck out seven and has now fanned 16 in his last two starts, The Guardians had five straight batters reach in the top of the third, but Blackburn was able to keep the inning from getting completely unraveled with a strikeout, sac fly, and line-out to center. Now at a respectable 4.21 ERA after five starts, Blackburn figures to get the ball again against the Yankees next Tuesday.
Gavin Williams took a no-decision after giving up four runs over 5 2/3 innings in his debut against the Athletics on Wednesday.
After three straight hits, Williams left a 1-2 curveball up for Ryan Noda to hit out in the third. He put down eight straight Athletics before walking J.J. Bleday to end his outing, but had a fairly pedestrian seven whiffs in 84 pitches despite his stuff, and created some disadvantageous counts for himself at times. The next scheduled start for Williams figures to be against the Royals next week, and we'll want to see better than this to keep him recommended in shallow leagues.
Joey Gallo was ejected from Wednesday's contest against the Red Sox for arguing balls and strikes.
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was also tossed after Gallo struck out looking on a full-count offering from Garrett Whitlock to end the fourth inning. He was 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts in this one.
Reese McGuire left Wednesday's game against the Twins with an apparent injury.
McGuire suffered an apparent hand injury on a swing during a sixth-inning at-bat and was immediately lifted from the contest. It's a tough break for the Red Sox since they lost Jorge Alfaro earlier this month to the Rockies when he opted out of his minor league contract. They'll presumably have to make a move to bring in some emergency depth -- most likely Triple-A backstop Caleb Hamilton -- if McGuire is going to wind up missing any time.
Luis Castillo pitched five innings in a loss against the Yankees Wednesday, allowing three runs on two homers.
This makes back-to-back starts where Castillo has struggled with his control -- he walked six against the Marlins last time out and four here, and he's given up five homers in his last three appearances. He was bailed out of a two-on, no-out situation in the fifth by a Teoscar Hernandez shoestring catch that led to a double play. His ERA is now at 2.89. Castillo will look to rebound in his next scheduled start against the Nationals on Monday.
Jhony Brito pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings against the Mariners on Wednesday, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Brito allowed just two singles through five innings, with the Mariners not mustering much of a threat against him and putting most of their balls in play on the ground. His velocity ticked up a little tonight from the seasonal average as well. If Brito stays in the rotation for another start -- it seems likely after how impressive this one was -- it would likely be against the A's next week in what would be an interesting stream.
Tommy Kahnle came on to close out New York's 4-2 win over Seattle for his first save of the season.
After retiring Jose Caballero to end the eighth, Michael King walked Julio Rodriguez and gave up an infield single to Ty France. Kahnle came on with one out and two on, induced a sacrifice fly to Jared Kelenic, and struck out Eugenio Suarez. In eight games since returning from injury, Kahnle has allowed just two hits and has a 0.00 ERA. If he stays hot, he could introduce himself higher up the Yankees bullpen pecking order.
Dylan Moore hit a solo home run against the Yankees in Seattle's loss on Wednesday.
It went into the second row in left-center off Wandy Peralta. Moore came on as a pinch-hitter in the eighth. He's hitting .071/.235/.286 in six games since returning from an oblique injury.
Jake Bauers hit a two-run homer in New York's 4-2 win against the Mariners Wednesday.
Bauers hammered a Luis Castillo four-seamer 392 feet to right center, putting the Yankees up 2-0 early in the contest. He also walked before being pinch-hit for by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Bauers has never hit for average and continues to not do that, but he is hitting .231/.315/.481 in 108 at-bats and has been leading off often for New York in his recent appearances.
Guardians released C Mike Zunino.
Zunino passed through waivers unclaimed and has been cut loose by the Guardians after being designated for assignment last week. The 32-year-old catcher finished with a disastrous .578 OPS across 42 games for Cleveland after signing a one-year, $6 million contract last offseason.
Yasmani Grandal has been scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Rangers due to right knee soreness.
Grandal is day-to-day for the moment. It'll be Seby Zavala handling the catching duties on Wednesday evening in his place.
Casey Schmitt (forearm) has returned to the Giants' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.
Schmitt is back at second base and batting ninth on Wednesday night following a two-game absence due to a left forearm contusion.
Garrett Crochet (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing for 2-3 weeks after receiving a cortisone injection.
Crochet landed on the injured list earlier this week with left shoulder inflammation and will likely be sidelined sometime into mid-to-late July.
Miles Mikolas gave up two runs over seven innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Nationals.
Mikolas took a shutout into the fifth inning before giving up a solo homer to CJ Abrams and an RBI double to Jeimer Candelario in the ensuing frame. The 34-year-old veteran right-hander tallied three strikeouts and only issued one walk. He'll carry a respectable 4.23 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 66/19 K/BB ratio across 93 2/3 innings (16 starts) into a tough home outing next Thursday against the Astros.
Trevor Williams tossed six shutout innings on Wednesday in a win over the Cardinals.
Williams scattered five hits, struck out four and didn't hand out a free pass over six frames. The 31-year-old righty will bring a serviceable 4.14 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 58/24 K/BB ratio across 76 innings (15 starts) into a road tilt on Monday against the Mariners.
Lars Nootbaar went 2-for-4 on Wednesday in the Cardinals' shutout loss to the Nationals.
Nootbaar was the lone St. Louis batter to record multiple hits as the Cardinals saw their four-game win steak snapped in an ugly shutout loss in Washington.
Padres recalled LHP Adrian Morejon from Triple-A El Paso.
Morejon made 26 relief appearances last year for the Padres and has been out all season recovering from a a left elbow sprain that he suffered back in spring training.
